Forensic Science: An Introduction to Scientific and Investigative Techniques Third Edition, Stuart James

Now revised and updated, this comprehensive work, long considered the top textbook in the forensics field, reaches far beyond the scope of those introductory texts that concentrate primarily on criminalistics. Covering a range of fundamental topics, it introduces newcomers to the field while providing the technical detail necessary to understand the field as a science. To this end the book is compatible with CRC lab manuals, including Forensic Science Laboratory Manual and Workbook, Third Edition (87193) and Crime Scene Processing and Laboratory Workbook (85425).

Encompassing classic criminalistics and the latest techniques, this introductory text presents forensic science with cases and techniques made accessible to nonscientists at the advanced high school and undergraduate level. The text covers forensic pathology and related specialties, evaluation of the crime scene, forensic science in the laboratory, forensic engineering, cybertechnology and forensic science, forensic application of the social sciences, and legal and ethical issues in forensic science. Learning features include quizes, an extensive glossary, numerous color photos, and appendices on professional guidelines, safety precautions, and web sites. The authors are forensic consultants.

James and Nordby have enlisted the hemisphere's leading experts in his or her individual field of expertise to explain and educate the reader to the topic at hand … I found the book to be concise, very informative, and easy to understand … For the college/university student, this book has the potential to be ranked as the 'must have' textbook … As a former crime scene investigator and current adjunct instructor, I believe this book to be a noteworthy addition to any private or agency library. Accordingly, it could easily fulfill the curriculum mandate for a general forensic science class at either the freshman or second-year post-secondary school level … the third edition of Forensic Science: An Introduction to Scientific and Investigative Techniques is not only a premiere reference textbook, but with its palatable price tag, this reference manual makes for a worthwhile academic investment either in or out of the classroom.

Chemistry: The Central Science 11th Edition, Theodore E. Brown

Chemistry: The Central Science is the most trusted book on the market--its scientific accuracy, clarity, innovative pedagogy, functional problem-solving and visuals set this book apart. Brown, LeMay, and Bursten teach students the concepts and skills they need without overcomplicating the subject. A comprehensive media package that works in tandem with the text helps students practice and learn while providing instructors the tools they need to succeed.

Emphasizing the wide variety of applications for chemistry, Brown (U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), LeMay (U. of Nevada, Reno), and Bursten (Ohio State U.) devote entire chapters to applications, such as chapter 12 on the chemistry of modem materials. Beginning with more generalized examinations of basic concepts, this standard text, first published in 1977, then narrows to discuss electronic structure and bonding, the states of matter, the factors that determine the speed and extent of chemical reactions, and nuclear, metal, non-metal, and organic chemistry.

Great book! Easy language- as possible for chemistry! The best part is the mastering chemistry that gives a great support for study and understanding the content of the book. It has many images, what helps a lot to visualize molecules, atoms.... I'm very satisfied with the book

Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: With Applications To Physics, Biology, Chemistry, And Engineering 1st Edition, Steven H. Strogatz

This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.A unique feature of the book is its emphasis on applications. These include mechanical vibrations, lasers, biological rhythms, superconducting circuits, insect outbreaks, chemical oscillators, genetic control systems, chaotic waterwheels, and even a technique for using chaos to send secret messages. In each case, the scientific background is explained at an elementary level and closely integrated with the mathematical theory.Richly illustrated, and with many exercises and worked examples, this book is ideal for an introductory course at the junior/senior or first-year graduate level. It is also ideal for the scientist who has not had formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desires to begin informal study. The prerequisites are multivariable calculus and introductory physics.

Were all Math books written like this, the number of students majoring in Math, Physics, etc. would rise considerably. The presentation is clear, lucid and comprehensive. Each concept is introduced with its motivating phenomena and the mathematical treatment is logical and elegant with many worked examples. This is one of those rare Math books that "begin at the beginning", yet go on to develop the concepts to a point useful even to grad students who want a review of basics before plunging into more advanced material. (If you are looking for more detailed mathematical stuff, I'd suggest Kevorkian's "Multiple Scale and Singular Perturbation Methods" or "Perturbation Methods" by Hinch.)

For the benefit of those reviewers who have complained that the mathematics is not rigorous enough, may I point out that the author clearly states the book is an introduction to the topic. I have come across other introductory books using basic differential equations, on similar topics where the material is presented in a disjointed way. Strogatz, however, shows us the inter-relatedness of the broad range of concepts and applications that fall within the title. Therein lies a major strength of this book.

Another big plus is that Strogatz presents those intermediate diagrams and results that take us to the final conclusion. Also he interprets the Math en route to the finale. He does not employ the usual "it is apparent that ..." strategy to pole-vault to miracle steps. This approach makes the book a breezy read; a remark not commonly made about advanced Math books!

General Chemistry 4th Edition, Donald A. McQuarrie

This new fourth edition of General Chemistry takes an atoms-first approach from beginning to end. In the tradition of McQuarrie's many previous works, it promises to be another ground-breaking text. This superb new textbook combines the clear writing and wonderful problems that have made McQuarrie famous among chemistry professors and students worldwide. Presented in an elegant design with all-new illustrations, it is available in a soft-cover edition to offer professors a fresh choice at an outstanding value. Student supplements include an online series of descriptive chemistry Interchapters, a Students Solutions Manual, and an optional state-of-the-art Online Homework program. For adopting professors, an Instructor's Manual and a CD of the art are also available.

"McQuarrie is a genius." Harry Gray, Caltech "Atoms First seems to be the flavor of the year in chemistry textbooks, but many of them seem to be little more than rearrangement of the chapters. It takes a master like McQuarrie to go back to the drawing board and create a logical development from smallest to largest that makes sense to students." Hal Harris, University of Missouri-St Louis "McQuarrie's book is extremely well-written, the order of topics is logical, and it does a great job with both introductory material and more advanced concepts. Students of all skill levels will be able to learn from this book." Mark Kearley, Florida State University

Organic Chemistry 6th Edition, Paula Y. Bruice

In this innovative text, Bruice balances coverage of traditional topics with bioorganic chemistry to show how organic chemistry is related to biological systems and to our daily lives. Functional groups are organized around mechanistic similarities, emphasizing what functional groups do rather than how they are made. Tying together the reactivity of a functional group and the synthesis of compounds resulting from its reactivity prevents students from needing to memorize lists of unrelated reactions. The Sixth Edition has been revised and streamlined throughout to enhance clarity and accessibility, and adds a wealth of new problems and problem-solving strategies.

New edition of an organic chemistry text that encourages students to think about what they have already learned and then apply this knowledge in a new setting. Bruice (U. of California) has organized the material in a way that discourages rote memorization. Functional groups are organized around mechanistic similarities such as electrophilic and nucleophilic additions; radical, nucleophilic, electrophilic aromatic, and nucleophilic acyl substitutions; and eliminations. The 30 chapters discuss introductory material; hydrocarbons, stereochemistry, and resonance; substitution and elimination reactions; identification of organic compounds; aromatic, carbonyl, and bioorganic compounds; and special topics. Includes some short biographies of scientists, together with a b&w photograph, and color illustrations and diagrams.

Among several Organic Chemistry textbooks I have sampled, this text offers the most clear explanations of mechanism. The authors development of logic greatly facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the material and eliminates much of the typical senseless memorization that often accompanies this material.

Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation 7th Edition, Steven S. Zumdahl

The seventh Edition of Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation offers unparalleled teaching and learning resources, with a robust technology package, in addition to the superior problem-solving pedagogy, engaging writing style, and strong emphasis on everyday applications that comprise the hallmarks of this best-selling text. Chemical reactions are covered early, to capture student interest, leaving more abstract material for later chapters. The authors explain chemical concepts by starting with the basics, using symbols or diagrams, and concluding by encouraging students to test their own comprehension of the solution. This step-by-step approach helps students develop critical problem-solving skills. Also, the accessible explanations and visualizations throughout the text motivate students and engage them in the material by helping them to connect abstract chemical principles to real-life experiences. The pedagogy includes chapter-opening discussions that introduce students to relevant applications and Chemistry in Focus boxes that describe everyday applications of chemistry such as artificial sweeteners, foaming chewing gum, and fake fats. Current applications appear throughout the text with easy-to-understand explanations and analogies.

Some other chemistry textbooks (I also have Silberberg's Chemistry and Brown et al's Chemistry: The Central Science) read like reference materials or encyclopedias. Zumdahl and DeCoste's book instead feels like a lively teacher explaining it in a really simple way that's easy to understand with graphics that really clarify the concepts.

For example, in their explanation of orbital theory, instead of just launching into the details of quantum mechanics, Zumdahl and DeCoste start with an anology of a firefly flying (an electron) around a glass of pheromones in the center of a room (the nucleus) -- the firefly spends most of its time near the center, but veers outwards occassionally. While perhaps the analogy is not perfect, I found it really helped in learning about what orbiting electrons might look like.

The only possible shortcoming is that the text may not be as comprehensive as others. First, it's not as long (Chemistry: The Central Science is over 1100 pages, this book is only 800 odd pages). As a result, there were some topics I wanted to read about but weren't included (e.g. Lewis Acids-Bases and coordination chemistry).

Nonetheless, I do feel the quality makes up for quantity here. I have actually taken chemistry and due to my post-graduate ambitutions, have had to come back and relearn (and in many cases just learn for the first time) a lot of the basic chemistry concepts. This book really helped me and is a valuable asset.

That said, I also like Chemistry: The Central Science, and recommend getting both for the best reference collection on introductory chemistry.

Prentice Hall Molecular Model Set For Organic Chemistry 2nd Edition, Pearson Education

This kit enables users to build virtually all simple molecules encountered in organic chemistry. Includes space-filling models that simulate the true shape of saturated compounds. Provides open models that form realistic single, double, and triple bonds — even strained rings. Allows smooth rotation of the bonds to make conformational analysis easy. Contains enough components to create several models at once. The components are precision-tooled from quality plastics, are virtually indestructible, and come in a sturdy plastic case for easy storage. Provides a useful Instruction Book — with photos, diagrams, and concise discussions of chemical principles.

I would recommend this kit to anyone who is taking organic chemistry. I found it very useful in learning organic chemistry mechanisms and structures. The high price is reflected in the high quality of the product!

In other reviews there were a couple of complaints about the kit not being realistic. However, the bond stiffness and design are surprisingly realistic (molecules aren't all that flimsy). The kit is perfect for create virtually any small organic molecule. It is excellent for seeing the difference between a chair and boat conformation, provided that it is put together appropriately. (My organic book and the directions were useful in arriving at the right conformation when I had problems.) The kit may just take a little bit of time to get used to, but it definitely is worth the work and time to see molecules in 3-D!

Study Guide/Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry 3rd Edition, Janice Smith

Written by Janice Gorzynski Smith and Erin R. Smith, the Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual provides step-by-step solutions to all in-chapter and end-of-chapter problems. Each chapter begins with an overview of key concepts and includes key rules and summary tables.

I used this solutions manual extensively during my Organic Chemistry class this past term. When I used this manual to help study, my exam scores were 10-15 points higher than when I did not use the book. This manual is not just an answer key like many textbooks (particularly math books) include in the back; this is a full solutions book. By this I mean the manual has the entire solution, including all the steps involved to reach the answer, for every single problem in the Smith Organic Chem (3rd edition) text. Physically speaking, the manual is an 8.5x11 B/W paperback volume about an inch thick. The color image that appears above is actually the cover of the textbook it goes with. To sum up, the content of the solution manual is great and dramatically improved my test scores, but the price is very high.

I felt myself struggling in Organic Chem and my professor had mentioned a solution manual for our textbook. Although the price was quite high I figured I would try it out anyways. This manual is great. Not only does it give you the answers to all the problems in the textbook but it gives you additional information on how to get the answer. For example on reaction problems instead of just giving the products, the solution manual goes through the entire reaction so you can see how the products are formed. Without this manual I don't know if I would have made it through Organic Chem!

Organic Chemistry 3rd Edition, Janice Smith

Serious Science with an Approach Built for Today’s Students

Smith's Organic Chemistry continues to breathe new life into the organic chemistry world. This new third edition retains its popular delivery of organic chemistry content in a student-friendly format. Janice Smith draws on her extensive teaching background to deliver organic chemistry in a way in which students learn: with limited use of text paragraphs, and through concisely written bulleted lists and highly detailed, well-labeled “teaching” illustrations. Don’t make your text decision without seeing Organic Chemistry, 3rd edition by Janice Gorzynski Smith!

First of all, this book is extremely well written and has a lot of visual help. It will explain ochem conceptually in a superb manner, HOWEVER. The practice problems are lacking. She does supply her notes in her solution manual, which is very helpful, but the problems are too easy. Condensed structures are used in problems even up to chapter 8, when really, it should all be line structures to be on par with problems on an actual test. No professor will baby you with condensed structures for mechanisms on a test. The book problems are catered more to give you the fundamentals, not actual challenges to prep you up for the test. I would highly recommend this book to UNDERSTAND ochem, and use Leroy Wades's to DO ochem. Leroy's unfortunately is not as well written, but the problems are very good. If these two writers could join forces, they would make the ultimate chem book.

Organic Chemistry 10th Edition, T. W. Graham Solomons

Now in a new edition, this book continues its tradition of excellence in teaching and preparing students for success in the organic classroom and beyond. A central theme of the authors's approach to organic chemistry is to emphasize the relationship between structure and reactivity. To accomplish this, the text is organized in a way that combines the most useful features of a functional group approach with one largely based on reaction mechanisms. Emphasizing mechanisms and their common aspects as often as possible, this book shows students what organic chemistry is, how it works, and what it does in living systems and the physical world around us.

A textbook that emphasizes the biological, medical, and environmental applications of organic chemistry. Among the changes in this edition (fifth was 1992) are an increased emphasis on reaction mechanisms, some 350 new problems, a revision of the chapter on spectroscopy to include new 300 MHz FT NMR spectra, new and updated material emphasizing biological applications, a new Special Topic on two- dimensional NMR techniques, and the addition of a glossary.

Introductory Chemistry: Concepts and Critical Thinking 6th Edition, Charles H. Corwin

To help students learn chemical skills and concepts more effectively, Introductory Chemistry: Concepts and Critical Thinking, Sixth Edition highlights the connection between key concepts and key problem-solving skills through critical thinking. Math and problem solving are covered early in the text; Corwin builds your problem-solving ability through innovative learning aids and technology formulated to meet your needs. This revision retains all the strengths of the previous editions, while adding emphasis on conceptual understanding and critical thinking.

This is good to aid in studying. The textbook itself has several (lots) of problems per chapter. This study guide has even more. The flashcards in the back help with memorizing the chemical compounds. The 2nd half of the book is just a repeat from the text book. It has the answers to the odd numbered questions from the textbook. It would be nice if the solutions manual and textbook gave answers.

Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering: An Integrated Approach 4th Edition, William D. Callister

Callister and Rethwisch’s Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering: An Integrated Approach 4th Edition continues to take the integrated approach to the organization of topics. That is, one specific structure, characteristic, or property type at a time is discussed for all three basic material types—viz. metals, ceramics, and polymeric materials. This order of presentation allows for the early introduction of non-metals and supports the engineer’s role in choosing materials based upon their characteristics.

Great text and figures: the text is highly readable and does a good job of placing nuances of certain equations and figures in plain sight (e.g. the conditional definition of "a" is clearly visible near the fracture toughness equation, etc.). Great introductory/refresher level in ALL areas: the authors avoid giving "special treatment" to their pet subjects like many authors do in other undergraduate texts. The cost for a new edition of this is well worth it for an undergraduate materials science student or graduate student preparing for a qualifier. HOWEVER, this is NOT the target audience in real life. Instead, this text is bought and sold quite frequently by mechanical engineers and biomedical engineers who have no interest in hanging onto a book that is worth a month's rent.

Chemistry 11th Edition, Raymond Chang

Designed for the two-semester general chemistry course, Chang’s best-selling textbook continues to take a traditional approach and is often considered a student and teacher favorite. The book features a straightforward, clear writing style and proven problem-solving strategies. It continues the tradition of providing a firm foundation in chemical concepts and principles while presenting a broad range of topics in a clear, concise manner.

The tradition of Chemistry has a new addition with co-author, Kenneth Goldsby from Florida State University, adding variations to the 11th edition. The organization of the chapter order has changed with nuclear chemistry moving up in the chapter order. There is a new problem type—Interpreting, Modeling, and Estimating—fully demonstrating what a real life chemist does on a daily basis. The authors have added over 340 new problems to the book.

The new edition of Chemistry continues to strike a balance between theory and application by incorporating real examples and helping students visualize the three-dimensional atomic and molecular structures that are the basis of chemical activity. An integral part of the text is to develop students' problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Chemistry 11th Edition continues to deliver the integration of tools designed to inspire both students and instructors. Effective technology is integrated throughout the book. The multimedia package for the new edition stretches students beyond the confines of the traditional textbook.
