Design of Wood Structures-ASD/LRFD 6th Edition, Donald Breyer

The leading text and reference on wood design, updated to include the latest codes and data

Continued the sterling standard set by earlier editions, this indispensable reference leads you through the complete design of a wood structure (except for the foundation), following the same sequence used in the actual design/construction process.

Now in it's sixth edition, this book has become the standard text on the design and construction of buildings made of wood. While most wooden structures are residences, the book also covers multi story wooden structures such as apartment houses, commercial buildings with wooden roofs, and to a limited extent newer techniques such as glue-laminate beams.

The book is suitable for use either as a text for a course or as a reference for self study. The sixth edition of this book was promoted by five major developments:

1. Publication of new dual-format (ASD/LRFD) wood design criteria in the 2005 National Design Specification for Wood Construction.

2. Publication of the new Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) Supplement to the NDS.

3. Publication of the comprehensive ASD/LRFD Manual for Engineered Wood Construction.

4. Publication and increased adoption nationally of the 2006 International Building Code. ==5. Publication of updated load standards in the 2005 edition of Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures.

Chemistry: The Molecular Nature of Matter 6th Edition, Neil D. Jespersen

Chemistry: The Study of Matter and Its Changes, Sixth Edition will provide the necessary practice, support and individualised instruction that ensures success in the General Chemistry course. This text provides the forum for problem solving and concept mastery of chemical phenomena that leads to proficiency and success in the General Chemistry course. This edition will continue a "molecular basis of chemistry" tradition, but in a manner that overtly and repeatedly reinforces the way properties at the molecular level are related to properties we observe at the macroscopic level. The unique "chemical tools" approach employed in this book provides a way of thinking that helps those students develop the ability to analyse and solve both mathematical and conceptual problems. This text follows the successful three-step approach described as "ANALYSIS," "SOLUTION" and "IS THE ANSWER REASONABLE?" This encourages the student to think about the problem before attempting to solve it, then working through the solution, and finally asking the important question "Does the answer make sense?" There are problem sets called "Bringing It Together" that contain problems which require students to bring together concepts from two or more of the preceding chapters. This reinforces learned concepts and builds concept mastery.

Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica 3rd Edition, Dan Bensky

The new 3rd edition of Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia Medica is designed to give practitioners the information they need to practice Chinese herbal medicine with greater understanding and confidence. It provides a wealth of new information - more than twice the content of the previous edition -- and practical insight into more than 530 of the most commonly used herbs in the Chinese pharmacopoeia.

The study of the herbal aspects of Chinese Medicine is still new to me. I am grateful for this unique text and the vast, comprehensive standard which the authors have set. Its organization for a newcomer is stellar. I also anticipate it would remain extremely helpful to experienced herbalists.

The table of contents lays out the "Materia" by their purpose for specific diagnoses: releasing the exterior, clearing heat, extinguishing wind, etc. There is a significant section on obsolete herbs and other substances that details why -- fascinating and useful for those reading historical texts. It provides information on what has been modified to achieve greater safety and/or to cooperate with preventing extinction to endangered species.

Each chapter has its own title page which rapidly summarizes the materia therein and any overall general subdivisions. For example, the chapter on HERBS THAT RELEASE THE EXTERIOR is divided by those that are warm+acrid versus cool+acrid, and it is followed by a nice comparative summary of specialized functions at the end. Similarly, the chapter on HERBS THAT CLEAR HEAT has separate subsections for those which also drain fire, cool the blood, dry dampness, resolve toxicity, and address deficiency heat. Again, these are followed by a very helpful summary of comparative functions. This systematic structure is very useful to me as a student struggling to form an an overall gestalt for such a complex field. It also seems like a powerful resource to revisit when puzzling over a potential formula and wondering what other alternatives might better suit a particular individualized need.

Introduction to Chemistry 3rd Edition, Rich Bauer

Introduction to Chemistry, 3e by Bauer/Birk/Marks offers today’s student a fresh perspective to the introduction of chemistry. This new textbook offers a conceptual approach to chemistry by starting first with macroscopic phenomena, and then presenting the underlying microscopic detail. Each chapter opens with a real-life scenario that helps students connect abstract chemical concepts to their own lives. The math found in Introduction to Chemistry, 3e is introduced on a need-to-know basis, with "Math Toolboxes" in select chapters to help support the math skills required in that chapter.

The book was shipped to me within a couple of days. The book is in great condition. It also has a lot of interesting information in each chapter. Great chemistry book.

Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: With Applications To Physics, Biology, Chemistry, And Engineering 1st Edition, Steven H. Strogatz

This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.A unique feature of the book is its emphasis on applications. These include mechanical vibrations, lasers, biological rhythms, superconducting circuits, insect outbreaks, chemical oscillators, genetic control systems, chaotic waterwheels, and even a technique for using chaos to send secret messages. In each case, the scientific background is explained at an elementary level and closely integrated with the mathematical theory.Richly illustrated, and with many exercises and worked examples, this book is ideal for an introductory course at the junior/senior or first-year graduate level. It is also ideal for the scientist who has not had formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desires to begin informal study. The prerequisites are multivariable calculus and introductory physics.

Were all Math books written like this, the number of students majoring in Math, Physics, etc. would rise considerably. The presentation is clear, lucid and comprehensive. Each concept is introduced with its motivating phenomena and the mathematical treatment is logical and elegant with many worked examples. This is one of those rare Math books that "begin at the beginning", yet go on to develop the concepts to a point useful even to grad students who want a review of basics before plunging into more advanced material. (If you are looking for more detailed mathematical stuff, I'd suggest Kevorkian's "Multiple Scale and Singular Perturbation Methods" or "Perturbation Methods" by Hinch.)

For the benefit of those reviewers who have complained that the mathematics is not rigorous enough, may I point out that the author clearly states the book is an introduction to the topic. I have come across other introductory books using basic differential equations, on similar topics where the material is presented in a disjointed way. Strogatz, however, shows us the inter-relatedness of the broad range of concepts and applications that fall within the title. Therein lies a major strength of this book.

Another big plus is that Strogatz presents those intermediate diagrams and results that take us to the final conclusion. Also he interprets the Math en route to the finale. He does not employ the usual "it is apparent that ..." strategy to pole-vault to miracle steps. This approach makes the book a breezy read; a remark not commonly made about advanced Math books!

Organic Chemistry 2nd Edition, Jonathan Clayden

This is undoubtedly the best modern book for learning organic chemistry. Unlike some other books which present organic chemistry as a set of facts and reactions to be learnt and memorized, this book instead emphasizes the unifying threads between different concepts and also stresses the assimilation of those concepts through real-life applications. Common themes such as syn-anti addition, carbocations and orbital overlap tie together disparate reactions and aspects of organic chemistry.

The first edition of this book was published in 2001 and the updated edition in 2012, so the discussion in this book includes reactions and reagents that are often missing from other comparable texts. For instance the volume still provides the most complete and readable description of the Grubbs metathesis reaction that I have come across, clearly emphasizing the mechanism, the effects of different ligands and solvents and applications to complex natural products. Other reactions of paramount importance to both academia and industry which are presented in the book include the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira couplings (which were recently awarded the Nobel Prize). The Buchwald-Hartwig reaction which was not as developed in 2001 but which has since seen immense growth gets an especially detailed mention.

The volume covers the whole gamut of current organic chemistry. Apart from its modern and unifying outlook, the other feature that stands out is the way it stresses the practical relevance of all this material. Organic chemistry is really the basis of our modern way of life and the book reflects this fact. The value of almost every important reaction and reagent is demonstrated by its application to the synthesis of an important drug, polymer, food additive or agrochemical. The book also does a great job of illustrating the great value of simple concepts; for instance, one chapter discusses the application of pKa to the development of the bestselling drug ranitidine, another provides an explanation of the lachrymatory (tear-inducing) properties of onions as rooted in sigmatropic reactions involving sulfur compounds. From the clinic to the kitchen, this book drives home the fact that organic chemistry is not just an intellectually rewarding exercise but is at the foundation our daily existence.

In addition to these qualities, the book is written in an honest, informal style and the authors admit uncertainty where it exists. Color enhances bonds, atoms and mechanistic arrows while boxed material contains key concepts and intriguing examples. Overall we are treated to an incredible amount of information in an attractive format and the authors must have really spent a lot of efforts in planning and presenting it. In its second edition this book continues to be an extremely useful source for students and practitioners alike and it is highly recommended.

Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry 8th Edition, Leroy G. Wade

I've bought a lot of solutions manuals for classes, and this is by far the best one I've ever purchased. Most manuals only give you help for odd numbered problems, or only a select few questions. This manual gives the answers, and for most, an explanation/show of steps for EVERY PROBLEM! It made learning organic chemistry so much easier since I could actually see if I did a problem right, or could be walked through to the answer by the manual itself.

I would definitely recommend the solutions manual to compliment the text book. It provides comprehensive answers to every problem in the book. Although there isn't always a step by step guide to the answer, it usually shows the logic behind the answer or has an explanation.

thank u! although the price is lit be higher than second hand one, it's brand new. for people who just need the answers for questions may consider the second hand as well.

General Chemistry: Principles and Modern Applications 10th Edition, Ralph H. Petrucci

The most trusted general chemistry text in Canada is back in a thoroughly revised 10th edition.

General Chemistry: Principles and Modern Applications is recognized for its superior problems, lucid writing, precision of argument, and precise and detailed treatment of chemistry. Its innovative pedagogical features, which encourage students to understand, apply, and synthesize content, reinforce the principles of general chemistry and provide the ideal platform for later studies.

The new tenth addition boasts a number of improvements, including expanded coverage of organic chemistry, as well as a consistent 3-part structure (Analyze – Solve – Assess) for every worked example. All of the student-favourite, pedagogically rich elements of this textbook have returned in the tenth edition with renewed focus, including 10 to 25 new questions per chapter and updated integrative examples that all follow the Practice Example A and Practice Example B format.

This book tries to have it all, for those who want calculus or a more detailed mathematical foundation to chemistry concepts, there's a "Are you wondering section...". For those who don't care as much they can just skip those. For those who don't want to read, they're examples throughout the book in easy to identify blue boxes where the apathetic reader can just memorize the steps to solve the problem. For those who even care less, there are summaries at the end of each 40 pg chapter. Well this book is dense, sometimes the explanations are drawn out and far too advanced for an introductory college level chemistry course, but it really does provide a firm foundation and supplement for a chemistry class. It is also a great reference for someone who likes to skip 8am chem class in favor of sleep. Pretty easy to understand, and everything you would ever possibly want to know about a chem concept can be found in this book.

The Second Edition offers a wealth of new and revised problems, approximately 50 new conceptual connections, an updated art program throughout, and is available with MasteringChemistry®, the most advanced online tutorial and assessment program available.

The sale of this book was great. Easy purchase and easy delivery. Book was just like viewed in the ad. However, it was only after the first day of class that I learned that there should have been a CD or a slip with an access code for this book to be able to complete assignments online for the professor to review and grade.

So make sure you check with your school to make sure that the access code is not needed.

Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach 1st Edition, Donald A. McQuarrie

As the first modern physical chemistry textbook to cover quantum mechanics before thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a contemporary approach to the study of physical chemistry. By beginning with quantum chemistry, students will learn the fundamental principles upon which all modern physical chemistry is built. The text includes a special set of "MathChapters" to review and summarize the mathematical tools required to master the material Thermodynamics is simultaneously taught from a bulk and microscopic viewpoint that enables the student to understand how bulk properties of materials are related to the properties of individual constituent molecules. This new text includes a variety of modern research topics in physical chemistry as well as hundreds of worked problems and examples.

Emphasizes a molecular approach to physical chemistry, discussing principles of quantum mechanics first and then using those ideas in development of thermodynamics and kinetics. Chapters on quantum subjects are interspersed with ten math chapters reviewing mathematical topics used in subsequent chapters. Includes material on current physical chemical research, with chapters on computational quantum chemistry, group theory, NMR spectroscopy, and lasers. Units and symbols used in the text follow IUPAC recommendations. Includes exercises.

One of the most emerging fear of P-Chem students is the rigid dificulty and obscureness of the mathematical background. Many textbooks have unfortunately overseen the importance of treating the mathematics and establishing link between the mathematics and the physical interpretation of chemical phenomenon. McQuarrie's text addresses and amends this problem in a brilliant. Difficult mathematical concepts are integrated along with the appropriate topics and are presented in a concise fashion. The first half of the text discusses topics in quantum chemistry while the rest deals with thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and kinetics. All the equations are backed by clear explanation and mathematical derivation. When I took quantum chemistry (the first course of the P-Chem sequence), we used McQuarrie and it worked just fine in explaining all the topics covered in lecture.s (such as spectroscopy, perturbation theory, etc). Unfortunately professor from the second semester (thermodynamics) decided to abandon McQuarrie and used instead Atkins' Physical Chemistry, which is absolutely not worth the money and very confusing and difficult to follow. I kept the McQuarrie book and used that as study aids and reference, whereas I trashed Atkins as soon as the semester was over (well, I immediately sold it back). McQuarrie is the only P-Chem book you'll find useful and clear.

General Chemistry: Atoms First 1st Edition, John E. McMurry

General Chemistry: Atoms First , First Edition starts from the building blocks of chemistry, the atom, allowing the authors to tell a cohesive story that progresses logically through molecules and compounds to help students intuitively follow complex concepts more logically. This unified thread of ideas helps students build a better foundation and ultimately gain a deeper understanding of chemical concepts. Students can more easily understand the microscopic-to-macroscopic connections between unobservable atoms and the observable behavior of matter in daily life, and are brought immediately into real chemistry–instead of being forced to memorize facts.

Reflecting a true atoms first perspective, the First Edition features experienced atoms-first authors, incorporates recommendations from a panel of atoms-first experts, and follows historical beliefs in teaching chemistry concepts based and real experimental data first. This approach distinguishes this text in the market based whereby other authors teach theory first, followed by experimental data.

The book uses a different approach than many by starting with the concepts of atoms and building up. It doesn't seem as helpful with the hard math components with chemistry mainly because it focuses on making sure the student understands the CONCEPTS of chemistry. I find that if you conceptually understand the material, the math will come naturally because you understand why the math works. I think it's a fine textbook for what it sets out to do: teach first-year college chemistry.

General Chemistry 4th Edition, Donald A. McQuarrie

This new fourth edition of General Chemistry takes an atoms-first approach from beginning to end. In the tradition of McQuarrie's many previous works, it promises to be another ground-breaking text. This superb new textbook combines the clear writing and wonderful problems that have made McQuarrie famous among chemistry professors and students worldwide. Presented in an elegant design with all-new illustrations, it is available in a soft-cover edition to offer professors a fresh choice at an outstanding value. Student supplements include an online series of descriptive chemistry Interchapters, a Students Solutions Manual, and an optional state-of-the-art Online Homework program. "McQuarrie is a genius." Harry Gray, Caltech "Atoms First seems to be the flavor of the year in chemistry textbooks, but many of them seem to be little more than rearrangement of the chapters. It takes a master like McQuarrie to go back to the drawing board and create a logical development from smallest to largest that makes sense to students." Hal Harris, University of Missouri-St Louis "McQuarrie's book is extremely well-written, the order of topics is logical, and it does a great job with both introductory material and more advanced concepts. Students of all skill levels will be able to learn from this book." Mark Kearley, Florida State University

Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry 6th Edition, David L. Nelson

Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition brings clarity and coherence to an often unwieldy discipline, while incorporating the field's most important recent developments and applications.

There are several comprehensive biochemistry texts available. The fourth edition of Lehninger draws on a successful history initiated with the first edition which was a landmark text in its time. The 28 chapters follow an expected and logical progression from discussion of the fundamental molecules involved in cellular events through metabolism to the latest aspects of molecular biology. Illustrations are well done and frequent. Each chapter is accompanied by a short but useful bibliography and a set of problems. Problem answers are at the end, together with a detailed glossary and a thorough index. In an attempt to capture as broad a student audience as possible, discussions of both photosynthesis and metabolic diseases are offered. Thus, the material can be used in undergraduate/graduate courses as well as in medical school. As with other representatives of this text style, the typical student is likely to have some difficulty assigning relative importance to a given item considering the overall depth of coverage of topics. Nevertheless, careful reading with some guidance will be rewarding for most scholars and the book will serve as companion text for the usual biochemistry course. The bibliography is not as complete as some, but will provide pointers to additional material. A useful, albeit formidable (for the student) contribution.

Lehninger has the ability to present topics in a clear manner. The text reads rather smoothly and ideas are arranged in logical order. This is an excellent text for undergraduate biochemistry classes. Graduate level classes may require a more detailed presentation of material such as the text by Voet and Voet.

Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach 5th Edition, John C. Gilbert

Providing even more emphasis on inquiry-based learning, a new green experiment, and more than a dozen new discovery experiments, this Fifth Edition of Gilbert and Martin's proven EXPERIMENTAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY contains procedures for both miniscale (also known as small scale) and microscale users. The manual first provides an early focus on equipment, record keeping, and safety in the laboratory, then walks students step by step through the laboratory techniques they need to perform the book's experiments with confidence. Chapters show students how to use the book's techniques to synthesize compounds and analyze their properties, complete multi-step syntheses of organic compounds, and solve structures of unknown compounds. A bioorganic experiment in Chapter 24 reflects the increasing emphasis on bioorganic chemistry in the course and gives students an opportunity to accomplish a mechanistically interesting and synthetically important coupling of two a-amino acids to produce a dipeptide.

I found this book to be very helpful; especially the sections before the labs. The sections give a short explanation of what's going on in your lab from a theoretical understanding before you apply it, so you actually get something out of the lab. I found the lab portions to be slightly confusing at times, but I find most lab overviews usually seem to be before performing the experiment (then it all starts to make sense).

Organic Chemistry 8th Edition, Francis A. Carey

A Market Leading, Traditional Approach to Organic Chemistry

Throughout all eight editions, Organic Chemistry has been designed to meet the needs of the "mainstream," two-semester, undergraduate organic chemistry course. This best-selling text gives students a solid understanding of organic chemistry by stressing how fundamental reaction mechanisms function and reactions occur.

An annoying feature of the book is the way they make you buy the answer book to compliment the book itself. I can understand space is an issue, but that answer book is highly priced itself. Other than that pet peeve this book is fantastic. Nearing the end of my second semester of organic chemistry this book has done its part. Read the book, and you'll do fine. You cannot go wrong by simply reading this book alone and ignoring the teacher since this book covers much more than the teacher can or will ever go over. It's not like you will have much of a choice in the book you want anyways, since most teachers don't give you that freedom, but don't be intimidated by this book since it does its job well.

Organic Chemistry 6th Edition, Paula Y. Bruice

In this innovative text, Bruice balances coverage of traditional topics with bioorganic chemistry to show how organic chemistry is related to biological systems and to our daily lives. Functional groups are organized around mechanistic similarities, emphasizing what functional groups do rather than how they are made. Tying together the reactivity of a functional group and the synthesis of compounds resulting from its reactivity prevents students from needing to memorize lists of unrelated reactions. The Sixth Edition has been revised and streamlined throughout to enhance clarity and accessibility, and adds a wealth of new problems and problem-solving strategies.

New edition of an organic chemistry text that encourages students to think about what they have already learned and then apply this knowledge in a new setting. Bruice (U. of California) has organized the material in a way that discourages rote memorization. Functional groups are organized around mechanistic similarities such as electrophilic and nucleophilic additions; radical, nucleophilic, electrophilic aromatic, and nucleophilic acyl substitutions; and eliminations. The 30 chapters discuss introductory material; hydrocarbons, stereochemistry, and resonance; substitution and elimination reactions; identification of organic compounds; aromatic, carbonyl, and bioorganic compounds; and special topics. Includes some short biographies of scientists, together with a b&w photograph, and color illustrations and diagrams.

Among several Organic Chemistry textbooks I have sampled, this text offers the most clear explanations of mechanism. The authors development of logic greatly facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the material and eliminates much of the typical senseless memorization that often accompanies this material.

Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation 7th Edition, Steven S. Zumdahl

The seventh Edition of Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation offers unparalleled teaching and learning resources, with a robust technology package, in addition to the superior problem-solving pedagogy, engaging writing style, and strong emphasis on everyday applications that comprise the hallmarks of this best-selling text. Chemical reactions are covered early, to capture student interest, leaving more abstract material for later chapters. The authors explain chemical concepts by starting with the basics, using symbols or diagrams, and concluding by encouraging students to test their own comprehension of the solution. This step-by-step approach helps students develop critical problem-solving skills. Also, the accessible explanations and visualizations throughout the text motivate students and engage them in the material by helping them to connect abstract chemical principles to real-life experiences. The pedagogy includes chapter-opening discussions that introduce students to relevant applications and Chemistry in Focus boxes that describe everyday applications of chemistry such as artificial sweeteners, foaming chewing gum, and fake fats. Current applications appear throughout the text with easy-to-understand explanations and analogies.

Some other chemistry textbooks (I also have Silberberg's Chemistry and Brown et al's Chemistry: The Central Science) read like reference materials or encyclopedias. Zumdahl and DeCoste's book instead feels like a lively teacher explaining it in a really simple way that's easy to understand with graphics that really clarify the concepts.

For example, in their explanation of orbital theory, instead of just launching into the details of quantum mechanics, Zumdahl and DeCoste start with an anology of a firefly flying (an electron) around a glass of pheromones in the center of a room (the nucleus) -- the firefly spends most of its time near the center, but veers outwards occassionally. While perhaps the analogy is not perfect, I found it really helped in learning about what orbiting electrons might look like.

The only possible shortcoming is that the text may not be as comprehensive as others. First, it's not as long (Chemistry: The Central Science is over 1100 pages, this book is only 800 odd pages). As a result, there were some topics I wanted to read about but weren't included (e.g. Lewis Acids-Bases and coordination chemistry).

Nonetheless, I do feel the quality makes up for quantity here. I have actually taken chemistry and due to my post-graduate ambitutions, have had to come back and relearn (and in many cases just learn for the first time) a lot of the basic chemistry concepts. This book really helped me and is a valuable asset.

That said, I also like Chemistry: The Central Science, and recommend getting both for the best reference collection on introductory chemistry.

Biochemistry: A Short Course 2nd Edition, John L. Tymoczko

Derived from the best-selling classic text originated by Lubert Stryer and continued by John Tymoczko and Jeremy Berg, Biochemistry: A Short Course focuses on the major topics taught in a one-semester biochemistry course. With its short chapters and relevant biological and clinical examples, this text shows biochemistry as a part of students' everyday lives. Offering the same signature writing style and physiological emphasis as the full-length text, this briefer book focuses on the major topics by eliminating details of enzyme mechanisms and organic chemistry, and by removing extraneous and advanced topics. Coverage is broken into short chapters for ease of use. Numerous examples and photos of biochemistry in action show students that biochemistry is part of everything they do and experience.

Students learn a biochemical concept, then see how that concept is applied in the real world. Clinical Insights show how our understanding of biochemical concepts influences an aspect of a disease or its cure, and Biological Insights show how simple changes in biochemical processes can have dramatic effects. The Second Edition has been fully updated with coverage of recent developments in biochemistry and human health. New Metabolism in Context sections show how new information on the role of leptins in hunger and satiety has changed the way biochemists think about obesity and diabetes. In addition to diet and obesity, other Metabolism in Context features focus on metabolism and cancer, and metabolism and exercise. The Experimental Techniques chapters (available on the companion website) have also been updated and expanded, exploring important techniques used by biochemists in the past as well as new technologies with which biochemists make discoveries in present-day laboratories.

Prentice Hall Molecular Model Set For Organic Chemistry 2nd Edition, Pearson Education

This kit enables users to build virtually all simple molecules encountered in organic chemistry. Includes space-filling models that simulate the true shape of saturated compounds. Provides open models that form realistic single, double, and triple bonds — even strained rings. Allows smooth rotation of the bonds to make conformational analysis easy. Contains enough components to create several models at once. The components are precision-tooled from quality plastics, are virtually indestructible, and come in a sturdy plastic case for easy storage. Provides a useful Instruction Book — with photos, diagrams, and concise discussions of chemical principles.

I would recommend this kit to anyone who is taking organic chemistry. I found it very useful in learning organic chemistry mechanisms and structures. The high price is reflected in the high quality of the product!

In other reviews there were a couple of complaints about the kit not being realistic. However, the bond stiffness and design are surprisingly realistic (molecules aren't all that flimsy). The kit is perfect for create virtually any small organic molecule. It is excellent for seeing the difference between a chair and boat conformation, provided that it is put together appropriately. (My organic book and the directions were useful in arriving at the right conformation when I had problems.) The kit may just take a little bit of time to get used to, but it definitely is worth the work and time to see molecules in 3-D!

Study Guide/Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry 3rd Edition, Janice Smith

Written by Janice Gorzynski Smith and Erin R. Smith, the Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual provides step-by-step solutions to all in-chapter and end-of-chapter problems. Each chapter begins with an overview of key concepts and includes key rules and summary tables.

I used this solutions manual extensively during my Organic Chemistry class this past term. When I used this manual to help study, my exam scores were 10-15 points higher than when I did not use the book. This manual is not just an answer key like many textbooks (particularly math books) include in the back; this is a full solutions book. By this I mean the manual has the entire solution, including all the steps involved to reach the answer, for every single problem in the Smith Organic Chem (3rd edition) text. Physically speaking, the manual is an 8.5x11 B/W paperback volume about an inch thick. The color image that appears above is actually the cover of the textbook it goes with. To sum up, the content of the solution manual is great and dramatically improved my test scores, but the price is very high.

I felt myself struggling in Organic Chem and my professor had mentioned a solution manual for our textbook. Although the price was quite high I figured I would try it out anyways. This manual is great. Not only does it give you the answers to all the problems in the textbook but it gives you additional information on how to get the answer. For example on reaction problems instead of just giving the products, the solution manual goes through the entire reaction so you can see how the products are formed. Without this manual I don't know if I would have made it through Organic Chem!
